Free chord dictionary: 12 roots, 22 chord types (major, minor, 7, maj7, m7, sus, dim, add9 and more), several positions per chord, fingerings, note names, playback and left-handed mode.
Formula : 1, 3, 5
Left-handed players enable mirror mode in the settings. Notation can be set to C D E, Do Re Mi or German notation (where B is written H).
The diagrams are generated by transposing reference shapes: classic open positions and CAGED shapes moved along the neck. This approach covers the vast majority of needs, but it does not offer exotic inversions, jazz voicings on non-adjacent strings, or so-called drop 2 and drop 3 fingerings. For those voicings, a jazz method or your ear remain the best guides.
The suggested fingering is a common one, not the only one possible: hand size, neck width and context (the chord before and the chord after) can justify another choice. Nor does the dictionary judge how playable a position is on a specific guitar: a maj7♯5 at the 10th fret is more comfortable on an electric than on a high-action acoustic.
Finally, the arpeggio playback uses a synthetic sound, without the tonal nuances of a real guitar.
The diagram shows the neck seen from the front, headstock at the top: vertical lines are the strings, low E on the left and high E on the right, and horizontal lines are the frets. A dot shows where to place a finger, an X above the diagram means the string is not played, an O means it is played open. A number on the left gives the starting fret for chords higher up the neck.
The open chords E minor, A minor, D, C, G and E major cover a considerable share of the pop, folk and rock repertoire. Then add the F barre chord, which unlocks the movable shapes. Work on each chord string by string until every note rings cleanly, before working on the changes.
Both add a seventh to the major triad, but not the same one. The 7 (dominant) chord contains the minor seventh, a whole tone below the root: C7 = C E G B flat, a bluesy, tense sound. The maj7 chord contains the major seventh, a semitone below the root: Cmaj7 = C E G B, a soft, jazzy sound.
Most often the index finger is not close enough to the fret or not rolled enough onto its side, since the bony edge of the finger presses better than the pad. Also check that the thumb is behind the neck, opposite the index finger, and that the elbow stays close to the body. A high action makes barre chords needlessly hard: a setup helps.
Take its barre shape and move it: an E shape moved to the 3rd fret gives G, to the 5th fret A. The diagrams in this dictionary show the starting fret for each position. A capo is the other solution: it transposes open chords without changing the fingerings.
